Automatic updates

Applied in the maintenance window, backed up first, rolled back automatically if it fails

Keeps the till current without the owner having to think about it. Updates are checked for periodically, downloaded in the background, verified and applied inside a maintenance window — with a pre-update backup, a post-update health check, and an automatic rollback when the new build does not work.

What this covers

  • An update check every 6 hours, plus one on login
  • A resumable background download, throttled to half speed while the shop is trading
  • Staged rollout — each store sits in a deterministic bucket, and a release at 25% reaches only the first quarter
  • Targeting waves — a release can be aimed at a named set of pilot stores, or held back from named stores
  • A scheduled install inside the maintenance window (02:00–04:00 by default), deferred if the till is busy
  • A mandatory pre-update backup — a failed backup cancels the update before anything is touched
  • Delta updates — a patch published per source version, with anything else falling back to the full package
  • Rollback — a failed migration or health check reverts to the previous build automatically; one step back only
  • Force update — a critical release shows a countdown and blocks the till once the deadline passes
  • An in-app update prompt with Install, Schedule and Remind me later
  • Version pinning — the platform can hold one store on a known-good build while a problem is diagnosed
  • Changelog display — before the update in the prompt, after it from the success banner
